My reader profile

I created a reader profile to have a good understanding of my target audience and what they were interested in. Before creating it i looked a couple of other magazines reader profiles such as NME and Q - magazine.http://www.ipcadvertising.com/resource/hvcjivb3x8p8oqk9bw285ffu.pdf
They showed different electrical items, foods and other miscellaneous objects. For my features page i decided to use a combination of these along with an artist (Pete Doherty) who would appeal to my target audience as he fits the music genre of my magazine. Also on my reader profile i decided to put on some statistics to reflect who reads the magazine and also what the readers like/do in their free time.

This question was helpful as i could see if people are willing to pay for music. The majority chose Itunes, this shows me that they are willing to pay for music so it gives me a good idea about the sort of price i could put on my magazine.

This question showed me how often people listen to new music. The majority was every week with the second highest at everyday. This shows that they have a high interest in new music and helps me know what to include in my features page, for example new and upcoming bands.
I decided to ask where people brought most of their clothes in my survey as from this i could interpret what sort of music they listen to and there interests. Most people chose Topshop/Topman or other. A large majority also chose designer brands, river island and H&M.

Most people chose the 'other' option on the question 'what music magazines do you like' this means that i will have to research into other music magazines and do more surveys to see what type they like. However a few people chose NME magazine which is the magazine most relevant to the sort i want to produce, this is helpful as i can look at NME for research and ideas for my own.
Most people chose the option of rock music and other in my survey. This means that i will have to do other research into other music genres to see what type people like. However quite a few people also chose drum and bass, accoustic and Indie music. This is relevant for my magazine as i wanted to focus on accoustic and Indie music mainly.

The majority of people who did my survey listen to music everyday, this shows that they are dedicated music lovers which helps me decide what sort of things to include in my features page. For example i will definatley include music articles on my features page rather than things to do with fashion music etc.
The majority of the people who took my survey were age 16-19 and one person was 20-22. This is appopriate for my magazine as i wanted to aim for the age group 16-20.

Most of the people chose the parties option when i asked what do you do at weekends, also they chose the option of pubs and seeing friends. This is important to my research as it shows that i need to include features that would be relevant to this is my magazine.

Survey Monkey research

This is my survey i made on survey monkey.
I produced this questionnaire to find out more about my target audience for my music magazine. This time i was able to send my questionnaire to people on facebook making it easier to find my target audience and ask more of a variety of people.

From doing this survey i found out a lot more about my target audience and what people liked. When making my survey i made the mistake of letting people choose more than one option on the multiple choice boxes. However i think this can be to my advantage as it allows me to see more of what people like rather than restricting them to one choice. I found out more of a variety of results from this questionnaire compared to my original questionnaire. This has helped me greatly with my music magazine as i now know more about who to target it at and have a definite on my age range for target audience.

My Questionnaire Results

Music questionnaire

View more presentations from Sarahwade.

Before creating my music magazine i did a hand written questionnaire and gave it out to people, this was to see what my target audience would be for my magazine and what sort of things they liked. This was done so i would know what to include in the features and articles in my magazine.

Magazine cover

Front Cover of magazine.

Evaluation of preliminary task

Evaluation

For my magazine I decided to do a healthy eating school magazine. I researched into different school magazines and healthy food magazines to get ideas for mine.

For the forms and conventions I used realistic cover lines and features on the front cover. I also decided to use an 'exclusive' as a banner going across the front page. I also used house colours of red and green, the green representing it being 'healthy.' I used a prominent mast head and a slogan above it. I used a medium close up of a student in my school holding an apple to enhance the healthy eating. I think these helped it to look realistic and professional. I used sans serif typography for both the front cover and for my contents page; I tried to stick to the house colours of the front page on the contents page also. I used a 'on the cover' feature to tell the reader what pages the features were that were on the front page. I also decided to use a picture of healthy food and unhealthy food and put the 'Good vs. bad' feature next to it to give readers a preview of what that page was about.

My media product represents the whole of the school social groups so it would be for working class students, it is targeted at a wide age range from 12 – 18, it is targeted at both male and females. The kind of media Institutions that would distribute my product would be schools who want to encourage healthy eating I n their own school.

I addressed and attracted my audience by using an eye catching image on a paler background making it stand out more and draw the reader's eye. I also used a large masthead in a prominent typeface and colour. Another feature I used to attract the audience was the 'exclusive' at the bottom of the magazine. I also used direct address on the front cover by saying 'what's really in your meal?' On the contents page again I used pictures of food to give the reader an insight into the magazine.

From the process of constructing this product I have learnt skills of how to take a medium close up photo and how to edit it so there was no backdrop around the person so it was able to be put on a different background. I also learnt skills using Photoshop and about the different typefaces and colours.

Typography ideas for school magazine

I played around with some different ideas for typography for my masthead on my preliminary school magazine task.

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

This school magazine has used a collage of loads of pictures from school activities. This shows that it is an active sporty type of school and suggests it may specialise in this. The house colours of the magazine are blue and white, this reflects the colour of the school uniform so the house colour of the school as a whole which is effective. The masthead is in a sans serif font making it look more proffesional. The name of the magazine is 'Contact' which is relevant as it could mean contact sports, or just contact in general at schools with other students such as group work etc. The magazine has not used any cover lines, the pictures however make up for this and give you an idea of what is inside.

Preliminary task - school magazine analysis

This is a magazine i found on a google search. It is a school magazine. From the cover you can see the target audience is for the parents of the children who go to the school rather than the pupils themselves. The main image gives the impression the magazine is for a science school as it clearly shows a two students and a teacher in a science lab classroom, the boy has a microscope. Also the main article appears to be on 'science on energy smart schools'.
The house colours of this magazine are red and green and this is clearly shown on the cover. The masthead is eye catching and in a sans serif and a serif font which draws the eye to it. The main image is also has a out of focus background which  allows the reader to focus on the main object but also allows them to see more about the magazine as you can see a teacher in a lab coat. You can also see the school is mixed gender as a girl and a boy student are shown on the cover.

Brand Identity

Creating a brand identity.

A brand identity is what makes the magazine stand out from other media products.
When making a magazine it is important that a strong brand identity is created in order to sell and show individuality making it easy to recognise in a row of magazines.
A brand identity is also important as it sets the expectations of the magazine, it must remain consistent and not change or the magazine will risk losing their target audience.
Brand identity can be created through house colours to fit the certian stereotype that the magazine wants as their target audience. For example a magazine aimed at gothic/emo stereotype may use black as a house colour as that is what appeals to that particular stereotype. Brand identity can also be created through the typography used for example if it is a serif or a sans serif font, and also the images and language uses etc.

I annotated Mojo music magazine to show the forms and conventions of the cover.
I looked at things like the mast head of the magazine and the cover lines. i also looked at the house style of mojo which helps us see who the target audience is. Mojo's target audience would be from older teenagers to older people for example they have Bob Dylan on the cover which would appeal to people who liked him when he was first around. From this we can learn that mojo has a mass target audience.

Introduction to my blog

I created this blog to post the research i find, i will then use this for my AS coursework.

I will be designing the front page, double page spread and contents pages of a music magazine.
